Guide: Maboneng/Braamfontein Street Art + Culture (These are WALKING Tours!)
Are you an individual who is excited and passionate about Johannesburg, Street Art and sharing the story of the city with tourists looking to visit the Joburg…if you are, then we’re looking for you!
Primary Role(s) –
- Safely guide guests along the routes of their chosen tours in Maboneng and/or Braamfontein i.e. prioritize the safety of the guest(s) for the full duration of each tour
- Highlight the Street Art and Graffiti in each area while sharing the meaning and stories behind some of the iconic murals and artworks
- Provide context to each area by explaining what makes Maboneng and/or Braamfontein unique i.e. history, culture, hidden gems and why are they cool places for people to visit etc.
- Share the history of South Africa and Johannesburg with the guests to help them better understand the city and South Africa i.e. history of both, how have they developed over time, significant events and people over time etc.
Minimum Requirements –
- Education: Matric OR 1.5yrs of work experience in any field – preferably, something related to tourism and hospitality
- Must have a VERY STRONG passion for OR interest in: Street Art, Graffiti, Johannesburg, South Africa!
- You must be VERY COMFORTABLE walking around the inner city of Johannesburg – Maboneng and Braamfontein Precincts specifically
- Comfortable and confident speaking in front of strangers i.e. international and local travellers of all ages from different backgrounds and cultures
- Communicate clearly and simply in English – bonus if you can speak French, Portuguese, Mandarin, Italian or Spanish
- Excellent people skills and ability to connect with people from different backgrounds and bring them together i.e. car guards, the homeless, tour guests, business owners along the route etc.!
- Min. 1.5yrs of work experience in any field i.e. a proven level of professionalism in the work environment
- You MUST enjoy walking and have a fair level of fitness i.e. tours are 1.5 – 2.5km each and 2hrs long!
- BONUS: have a general interest/knowledge about current affairs of the world i.e. our guests come from all over the world and this will help you relate to issues affecting the countries the guests come from and answer questions!
Availability –
- This position requires a high level of flexibility from the interested individual as tours are based on bookings i.e. bookings for tours come in as and when they come in but we will keep you updated as early as possible so that you can plan your schedule!
- Maboneng Street Art and Culture Tour: MON – SUN (EXCL. WED!) 10am – 12pm & 2 – 4pm
- Braamfontein Street Art and Culture Tour: TUES, THUR 2 – 4pm || SAT 11am – 1pm
Remuneration –
- R120 – R200 per tour (i.e. R60 – R100 hr)
- You will ONLY be paid for the tours you are scheduled to do and complete i.e. the more tours you do, the more you will be paid and vice versa!
- NB! You are entitled to keep ALL tips you earn on each tour you guide!
Training –
- Each successful applicant will receive on-the-job training by joining a senior guide on at least 10 tours BEFORE you will be considered ready to guide tours on your own – no payment will be received during this training period except sharing the tips earned on these first 10 tours!
- Successful applicants will also be provided with reading and learning materials necessary to fulfill their roles
NB – this is VERY important!
Johannesburg generally has a very negative reputation amongst locals and international travellers, therefore, it’s absolutely imperative that the interested individual has a very high level of excitement/passion for the City – without this, this job will be challenging for you!
