We meet at the newly opened Skinner Cafe where guests can grab a light snack or coffee while you wait for the tour to start!
This tour starts with a brief history of Braamfontein’s development from a small farm in 1853 to the cool cultural hub it has become in the past 22 years!
Once done with the introduction, we speak about the impact of Street Art in the neighbourhood and how it has been used to create this hip and cool precinct – this includes the stories behind some of the iconic artworks and murals on the walls!
We then visit the stylish showroom of local street wear brand “Boys of Soweto” and learn about their journey from humble beginnings in Soweto to fashion walks across the world; around the corner, we find a hidden gem of a book store “The Commune”, which celebrates authors and works rooted in Pan Africanism and issues largely affecting Africa and the Global South.
No tour of Braamfontein is complete without a stop at the Wits Art Museum which showcases contemporary African art by established and emerging artists from across the country and continent – current exhibition: “Black Subjects” by Serge Alain Nitegeka!
One of the highlights of this tour is a visit to the local Graffiti store, where guests may bump into some of the local Graffiti Artists whose works you see on the City’s walls and along this tour!
The tour ends with a slow walk back to the meeting point, where we chat about why we love this neighbourhood and some of the cool things to do in the area after the tour.
Braamfontein is one of the most culture rich areas in Johannesburg and so we encourage you to ask questions…its got fashion, its got a vibe, its got culture and its got even more amazing people!
Come explore this vibrant neighbourhood and see why it’s home to urban contemporary street culture that inspires the city and it’s young people!
***NOTE***
On THURS and SAT only, we end this tour at the 2nd oldest bar in Johannesburg “Kitcheners Carvery Bar” which opened in 1902 and is still operational today – we encourage you to enjoy a beer with us after the tour as the perfect way to cool down and get to know each other a bit more…our recommendation: try the Castle Lager on Tap, a truly local and refreshing beer!
